Wool Wash

How do I wash wool blend clothing items, without causing major pilling/fiber loss?
I have some wool blend clothing items from GAP and Old Navy that all say machine wash on the label, but when I wash using the gentle cycle, Woolite, and low tumble dry, they get all pilly, and there are always massive fuzz deposits in the lint trap of my dryer.
Should I try handwashing and then hang dry? Just afraid of getting a major stain and not being able to handwash it out, I guess. Any suggestions?
Wash inside out. Cold water wash, on delicate with Woolite, and air dry if possible.
