18 month old suddenly hates bath time!?
My son is 18 month old and until a few weeks ago has always loved his baths and would have happily stayed in there for hours if I’d let him.
But he’s suddenly not enjoying them at all. He cries as soon as I put him in there and tries to climb out.
Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do about it?
He is very tired by bathtime. Should I try an earlier bathtime?
He hasn’t had any ‘bad’ experiences in the bath such as slipping over or getting shampoo in his eyes. The water is definitely the right temperature because I use a digital thermometer.
I put all his favorite toys in and try all sorts but he’s just not interested.
I’ve read that taking him swimming could be a possible solution but I can’t do that because he’s prone to ear infections and isn’t allowed to go swimming – doctor’s orders. Same goes for putting him in the shower. He can’t get his ears wet.
Many thanks
my daughter, who’s 9 years old now, went thru the bath hating phase from about 18 months to 24 months. i simply gave her sponge baths standing at the sink and tried the bath every 2 weeks or so. but if she screamed i would simply take her out again and wash her with the sponge. and when she was about 24 months old she simply stopped being afraid of it. i don’t know why she was afraid of it or why she suddenly lost her fear of it 6 months later.
but definetly try the other suggestions. going in the bath with him might be enough for him to loose the fear.
i did read that this irrational fear of baths is extremely common and kids grow out of it. so don’t stress yourself out over it. bathtime should be fun for you too, so if it upsets and stresses you out just wash him whilst standing beside the sink. he’ll be just as clean!
