How to protect your Smart Media Card

Although the Smart Media Card is slowly disappearing from the market, it still performs great on the digital cameras that still support it.

There have been rumors that the Smart Media Card is very corruptible. But while it is sensitive to mishandling and fingerprints, the card itself has no manufacture fault. To avoid damaging the information you have stored on the card you could simply handle it with care. Another way that you can make sure that your card won’t get damaged is if you put it into your digital camera and never remove it again. This should be a solution coupled with the purchase or ownership of a camera which ideally interfaces directly with your PC. This way you won’t even have to remove it from the digital camera.

Another thing that you should be aware of is that there are two types of Smart Media Card which are not interchangeable. The difference between them is the voltage. Therefore there are 3.3v cards and there are 5v cards. Usually, the electronic devices that still support the Smart Media Card can only handle one of the voltages so prior to purchasing a Smart Media Card you should first find out what is the voltage supported by your electronic device. Failing to do so may result in your new Smart Media Card not working with your electronic devices. To identify the voltage on the smart media cards you could simply ask the clerk at the store you are buying it from or the support staff from the website you are purchasing it from.

There are a lot of older digital cameras that work with smart media cards and that can still hold their own even to the technology from today. You shouldn’t abandon them just because the smart media card cannot hold as many pictures at one time as a current generation digital camera.
