Rain Cover

How important is a rain cover for backpacking in Europe?
Do you really need one? I was looking into a Kelty 3100 or a Hi-Tec Inca Trail, which is kind of like a Kelty knock-off. For the Kelty, it would be an extra cost, but it’s about the same cost as the Hi-Tech, which has a rain cover and a hydration pack included.
I have been backpacking in Europe many times and never spend much on a rain cover.
Mostly I pack the things in my pack in plastic bags anyway, as it keeps the clothes together with the rest of the same kind, and keeps the cleans apart from the dirties.
But I never had a wet inside of my pack.
Some times I have used cheap covers that came with a bag or I could pick up really cheap, but on a good travel backpack they are not needed.
If it is raining cats and dogs you will want to be under cover, so your pack also is.
The most risk you run when your pack is placed outside in the rain when you get out of a bus or train, but in Europe they almost never do that. And then a cover may not help enough, as they are likely to put your pack in a puddle.
The hydration pack might be worth the money though.
Take the pack that suits your body best, which has the best size for what you need and so on.
