Pull Ups

How do i start doing chin ups/pull ups if i can’t barely do one?
I just started going to the gym yesterday. I ran for 15 minutes to get warmed up, did about 20 push ups, and then tried to do a chin up or pull up… i could only hold myself for a couple of seconds and then i would just hang like an idiot…how can i hold myself up enough to atleast do1 or even 2 proper ones?
Some gyms have assisted pull up machines. Look for a very tall machine that has a knee pad or bar to stand on and a stack of weights. The ones with the knee pads look like this: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=272 What these machines allow you to do is to do pull ups with only a portion of your body weight. Whatever weight you select from the weight stack is the amount it will “remove” from your body weight. Find a weight that just barely allows you to do a few pull ups and work from there. That’s what helped me!
