Bamboo Baby Clothes – A Super Natural Alternative to Organic Cotton
Not may people know that bamboo fibre is used for making organic baby clothes. This article will explain how, what and where it’s made and the benefits of organic bamboo baby clothes over normal fibres.
Yes… you have read it right… there are clothes made from bamboo. They are super soft and very strong. Bamboo is a natural alternative to organic cotton because it is harvested from sustainable and renewable plantations. It needs very little pest control so there are no chemical pesticides used in the growing of bamboo fibre.
How is bamboo fibre made?
Bamboo fibre is made from the pulp of the bamboo grass. The fabric it produces is very strong but very soft. It also has insulating properties, meaning it will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. The plant is very quick growing and therefore sustainable to demand. It’s very easily grown as an organic product due to the low number of parasites or pests that will destroy it, unlike cotton which has many pests and is prone to disease.
Bamboo fibre has unique qualities that mean it can be worn against the skin and has proved to be less prone to irritation and allergies than other organic and natural fibres. In tests carried out against organic cotton which also has a very low risk of allergies, bamboo proved to be even less likely to cause irritation or allergies than the cotton.
Many bamboo clothes producers use natural dyes made from natural products such as fruit and vegetables to colour their clothing ranges. This means they don’t have to use chemical stabilisers such as toxic mordant used in the normal production of baby clothes.
The main reason why most people buy bamboo baby clothes is because it is super soft, much softer than cotton and it’s great for their baby’s skin. But there are bigger issues at stake with the growing of sustainable organic plants for the manufacture of clothing in the future. The lack of chemicals used in the manufacturing and growing of these fibres means they are better for your baby’s future too. As it is their planet we are ruining.
Bamboo grows extremely fast, in fact it is the fastest growing plant in the world. It requires less water to grow than cotton and releases more oxygen into the atmosphere than cotton does. With its high yield it puts less strain on the land and the workers that farm it. According to the World Health Organisation there are 20,000 deaths per year from pesticide poisoning. Most of which are contributed to cotton farming.
With a 60% greater yield per hectare using less water and producing more oxygen than cotton you can see why we must embrace bamboo baby clothes and help make a better world for our babies and their future. We are also making a better work place for the plantation workers. Saving lives and protecting their future too. Don’t forget the plantation workers have babies that rely on them too!
Well… I hope you are a bit wiser about bamboo fibre and will investigate a bit more. It is a terrific product and so good in many ways on many levels. Buy one or two baby outfits and see what you think. We all need to be more aware of what we are buying and realise that unnatural, mass produced cheap clothing comes at a big price to the plantation workers and our planet.
