In Luke 12:32 why would one group say “giving you” when the Bible says “give you”?
Compare this translation:
“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (KJV) with…
“Have no fear, little flock, because your Father has approved of giving you the kingdom” (NWT).
Does the NWT make it seem as if receiving the kingdom is just a future possibility, whereas the KJV shows God has decreed – and so it will happen. Otherwise, the little flock would have grounds to fear! All whom Christ gathers into his one fold know they are imperfect sinners, so if Jesus had not assured them that the Father was pleased to give them the kingdom, they could have suffered many doubts and fears. Would the NWT give a less assured rendering due to the JW doctrine that nobody can know whether they’ll ‘receive’ the kingdom until they’ve worked hard enough, long enough for it?
OK, nwt isn’t quite correct, but probably not for a reason you would readily understand. I’ll try to lay out the facts:
1. There is NO time significance in this word form (give). You cannot say based on this particular form if it has happened, is happening now, or will happen.
2. There IS an “aspect” to this word. The choices here are that it is a COMPLETED action, a completed action WITH ENDURING EFFECTS, or UNSPECIFIED. In this particular case, it is unspecified, so we don’t know anything more.
3. OK, so we don’t know anything about time from this word, but what about the immediate context? Here we get a break. The verb which should be translated by something like “pleased” or “gave pleasure” is aorist tense, i.e. comparable to past tense in English. It indicates a COMPLETED action, so, making the “gift” had already pleased the Father.
4. “Giving” would indicate a present participle in the original instead of the infinitive. It indicates either present or future continuing action, but the original word has no such aspect.
What do we know of the timing of the kingdom from elsewhere in the Gospels?
Matthew 16:28 Verily I say unto you, there are some of them that stand here, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Mark 9:1 Jesus went on to say, “I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!”
…That sure sounds like near term to me. So, what did those people SEE? The obvious answer is Pentecost and the beginning of the church. If, as it seems, Jesus called the church “the Kingdom,” that greatly limits our range in interpreting what he might mean by that term elsewhere.
