Why do my cats scratch on my carpet?!?
I have used sprays as directed by, and that only works until I run out of the stuff. They have a scraching post that they use once in a while. And I have used a cat nip spray on it (scraching post) and it still gets used only once in a while.

They like the convenience and texture of the carpet over that of the post. Try covering it with a similar material. Usually scratching is to sharpen nails. They can be hell on furniture. Another choice would be to get plastic runner and cover the carpet, forcing them to get used to the newly recovered post. The way you have dealt with it is topical – the sympton and not permanent – the cause of the behavior. They are avoiding the post for a reason. Not convenient, near something that smells bad, bad texture, position. Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of a cat.
