what is a good resource for house breaking a puppy and my toddler at the same time?
my little boy is 17 months old and loves dogs. We have been putting off getting him one as long as we could, but a 2 month old puppy has just fallen into our laps. My son is so excited and already named him boe boe. He is a sweet puppy, but like all puppies, he jumps up on my son and with those little puppy claws it makes my son nervous. He can also knock my son down being that he is almost as tall as my son standing up. My son does really well with him so far, but i am trying to house break the dog and train the dog and my son to play well together. The dog is kind of afraid of my son and wants to sit by me most of the time. Any advice or even some good books that will help me with this task
I recommend The Puppy Owner’s Manual by Diana Del Mar for the puppy; she teaches specific strategies for house breaking and dealing with puppy issues. The Brazelton potty training book for your son will be very helpful… it describes the developmental milestones your son needs to acheive before he is ready to potty train, and how to help him get there.
You have a lot of questions about the puppy, so I’m going to answer a couple of them;
To get the puppy to stop jumping, you need to make sure that no one pets him when he jumps; I recommend getting soda can and putting pennies in it and when he is jumping shake it while saying DOWN. You can use the can to discourage any negative behavior; if you don’t have the can, use your voice and say firmly DOWN.
ALWAYS make sure that you supervise all interactions that your son and puppy have together… both for your son’s safety and for your puppy’s safety… NEVER leave them alone together.
I kennel trained my dogs when they were young; never use the kennel as a punishment, but use it as a safe place for the puppy to go when he needs a break… put it in a quiet place where your son is not likely to go.
