How can a FORD AEROSTAR’s third/bench seat be changed/replaced to have head/neck support?
Our 1995 Ford Aerostar will work much better for our family if we can find a way to make the third row/bench seat have head/neck support. Is there a way to ADD headrests to the bench seat? Or Will two captains chairs be able to fit in its place? Or Would a WINDSTAR bench seat (with higher backs) fit? Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
I must preface my answer with the unerring fact that to alter seating in a car/van without regard to providing the same degree of engineering conditions and safety of the original car is generally illegal. Also **all** seat belts for the seat(s) must be installed/replaced if you carry out this upgrade.
The first is to research the design of the vehicle and find if a bench seat with head/neck support was made for that specific vehicle in either an upmarket or re-badged version. This will allow you to buy the part(s) from Ford and fit them to your vehicle. Check for issues like whether you have the correct mounting points and threaded bolt-holes welded to the bodywork to carry out the conversion. If in doubt, don’t do it.
The second is to have a qualified mechanical engineer replace the bench seat with a seat that provides the neck/head support you require and provide you with a legal instrument stating all work he has undertaken is compliant with engineering/safety and government legislation for the conversion and completed to the best of his ability.
