Fetal Heart

Usual Signs of Fetal Pole Heart Beat

A normal gestation period is considered to be around forty weeks. However, it is important to say that this period is counted from day one of the mother’s last menstrual period. Basically, at the time of a missed menstrual period, a mother-to-be is considered to be 4 weeks pregnant. Early warning signs of pregnancy can be detected by ultrasound instrument or by blood tests. Somewhere around 6 weeks of pregnancy, the fetal pole (the first visible sign of a developing human embryo), can be seen on an ultrasound instrument. A fetal heart beat is first seen around 6 to 6.5 weeks of pregnancy.

This first visible sign of a developing embryo has no leg or arm buds still. Basically, it looks like a bent shrimp or curved pole, with what will be the human embryo’s head at one end and a tail at the other end. It can grow around one millimeter per one day after it appears at six weeks of gestation period. It can be measured by crown-rump length or simply CRL. The CRL is the measurement of the length of fetuses as well as embryos from the top of the head right down to the bottom of the buttocks.

A fetal heart beat should be detected on an ultrasound instrument (which is usually referred to as the fetal Doppler) somewhere around six weeks of pregnancy, or when the crown-rump length reaches somewhere around five millimeters. This happens between five and a half to six and a half weeks of pregnancy.

Once a child is born, the heart rate is between a hundred and twenty to a hundred and sixty BPM (beats per one minute). On the other hand, once the baby’s tiny heart first starts to beat, it beats just ninety to a hundred and ten BPM. However, the fetal heart rate is not that significant when compared to the lack or presence of baby heartbeat. Since a fetal heart rate of less than ninety beats per minute BPM with a crown-rump of just five millimeters can mean the gestation isn’t viable.

In case a mother-to-be believes she got pregnant earlier than she did, the lack of a baby heartbeat by six and a half weeks of gestation period can be very alarming. On the other hand, in case the fetal pole has not yet reached a crown-rump of five millimeters, the gestation period cannot be as advanced as believed. Basically, every fetal pole with a heart-beat indicates a seventy to ninety percent chance that the gestation period is viable and result in a live birth. However, a lack of fetal heart-beat by the time the fetal pole is five millimeters is an important sign and basically indicates possible miscarriage
