How can I disable the emergency heat on my digital thermostat?
The gas has been turned off and I want my heat pump to run continuously since it got cold again. Does anyone know how I can stop the emergency heat from trying to kick on? (White Rogers digital). Thanks for any suggestions?
There are different types of systems and they can be wired up different ways so it is difficult to give an answer.
Assuming the simplest that this is a heat pump mounted to a gas furnace as the air handler. You can remove the white wire and that will cut off the furnace. That would be the wire to the “W” on the thermostat and at the furnace. It might be easier to do at the furnace board than at the thermostat.
Turn off the power, remove the wire, and tape it off. Then button it up and turn the power back on.
If it is a two stage unit you might have a “W1″ and a W2″, remove both.
If it is a package unit with the whole system in a single box outside it might be different.
One other suggestion is that the setback for when the emergency heat comes on is adjustable on many thermostats. Go to White Rogers website and see if they have a manual for the thermostat. It might be a dip switch, or a screw setting on the back of the thermostat you change. Normally the emer. heat comes on if the temp is 3 degrees below normal after running for some time but on some that can be changed to up to a 7 degree setback and that may be enough to keep it from coming on.
It is possible that the adjustment instructions are on the back of the Tstat. But if a gas furnace just removing the white wire(s) is probably easiest.
