when do you transition to the toddler bed from crib?
How do I know when my 19-month-old son is ready to try a toddler bed and get rid of the crib? What do most people do to make this transition happen? I have child-proofed his room. Do, I leave his door open at night so he can come into my room? Do I keep it closed so he’ll stay in his room whether he sleeps in the bed or not?
We waited until my daughter was about 2. I would say that the most important thing to look at is how much/if he rolls around. Most toddler beds have a little guardrail, but it doesn’t go the full length of the bed, so my daughter would still fall out (she still rolls around a LOT at 4 yrs old, and we had to buy full guardrails to put on her twin bed). The nice thing is that even if they do fall out, they’re not far from the ground – most nights we would come upstairs to find my daughter just sleeping on the floor.
To transition, we made a big deal about how she was a big girl and was getting a “big girl bed.” Then she watched as my husband took down her crib and put together her “big girl bed” in her room Our toddler bed used the crib mattress, so we didn’t buy any new bedding, just put a warm quilt on it with a pillow. The fact that it was a bed for “big girls” was really enough for her. She got up a lot at night, but not because she didn’t like the bed – more because she could!
As for the door open/close, I would do whatever you feel comfortable doing. If you want him to eventually sleep with the door closed (or he had the door closed when he was in the crib), I would start right away with the door closed and just leave the baby monitor in his room so you can hear if he wakes up (he almost certainly will for the first few nights at least). Be prepared – I remember my oldest waking up 4-5 times/night for at least a few nights (then progressively less as time went on) and I’m not looking forward to it with my youngest. Good luck!
