I cant stop worrying about SIDS!?
I feel worried all the time! My baby is 1 week old and I can’t stop obsessing! Some of you may say it’s regular to worry, but this is beyond worry, I freak out and jump up at any noises while she sleeps or when she’s too quiet. I follow all the guidelines she sleeps on her back, no blankets, toys, fuzzy or fluffy bedding… it’s just her, the bassinet, and she is swaddled in a waffle-cotton blanket given to us by the hospital. I can’t get the thoughts of losing her out of my head and the fact that it is an uncontrollable happenstance worries me even more… I already worry about the things I can control… I can’t deal with the things I can’t. Any advice or tips? I was thinking of buying a breathing monitor to kind of put my mind at ease at night, also a swaddling blanket with velcro (hers comes undone sometimes and once i found the corner covering her face and almost cried) any product suggestions?
Is it just SIDS, or are you worrying a lot about other things too? You might want to consider the possibility of post-partum depression. Out of control hormones can make you unnecessarily anxious and worried. Sleep deprivation (what new mama isn’t sleep deprived?) can also contribute to anxiety. It may just be a mild hormonal imbalance which may correct itself in time as your body recovers from pregnancy and giving birth, or it could be a larger problem that needs treatment. If you think that might be the case, talk to your doctor.
In the US the SIDS rate is about 0.5 deaths per 1,000 babies. That’s a 0.05 % chance of it being your baby – very small. The precautions you are taking to minimize her risk reduce that even further. In addition to the things you mentioned, the following things can reduce the risk of SIDS: breastfeeding, avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke, keeping the room temperature cool, and co-sleeping (if you follow guidelines for safe co-sleeping). Otherwise, just try to relax. The idea of SIDS (or any other cause of infant death) is a nightmare for any parent, but realistically the chances of it happening to you are very small. Try not to let fear of tragedy keep you from enjoying these precious, fleeting moments with your baby.
