Cloth Nappies

The Case for Reusable Cloth Nappies in Daycare/Preschools

The re-usable cloth nappy would actually be the perfect solution to replace disposables when babies/toddlers are at daycare or preschool. But why are schools so dead set against it?

The steps in using a reusable cloth nappy are pretty simple.  You put the nappy on like you do a disposable and you change the nappy for another reusable when needed (either a poo or a wee-full nappy). It works on the same principle as a disposable, you just don’t throw them away.

So why are daycares and preschools quite against the thought of accepting reusables while children are in their care? I mean it would solve alot of problems, the biggest being disposable nappy waste. And, not to mention the smell that comes with a collection of poo’d nappies! With the garbage being collected mostly once a week, that is quite a stench!

It’s just my thought pattern but it would just be so easy! The caregiver would change the nappy, flush the liner down the loo if there is a poo and then put the nappy (or nappies collected throughout the day) in a nappy bag until the end of the day when you can hand it to the parents when they collect the child.  No washing, no mess, no fuss.

Basically we all have to make an effort with the environment and it is my opinion that schools are going to have to start looking at this option. Most people work which leaves babies and toddlers going to school. Reusables can be done at schools and done successfully.

If you are in the daycare/teacher profession I challenge you to think of this option and look into going this route.  It is not more difficult than disposables as you would not be required to clean the nappy.  The only thing different is flushing or throwing away the liner and instead of chucking the disposable in a bin you will instead be putting the nappies into a nappy bag for the parent to collect. You would also be helping your parents who battle financially every month with the cost of living increasing.

Lets do this thing and start making changes for the future of the babes we have in our care.
